Blast from the past...1989

Blast from the past...1989 (24 years ago)

Submitted by Mandee Nguyen, Historian

It’s time to dust off those historic records and take a look back into the archives. When was the last time UMACRAO was hosted in Cedar Rapids, Iowa? Well, 1989!

1989 UMACRAO Officers

President, Carol Cline, Assistant Director for Transfer Relations, University of Minnesota

President-elect, Philip Patton, Associate Registrar/Systems, University of Northern Iowa

Secretary, Donna Bruce, Admissions Officer, University of North Dakota

Treasurer, Herman Richtsmeier, Associate Registrar, Iowa State University

Annual Meeting

The 56th UMACRAO Annual Meeting was held from October 22-24, 1989 at the Stouffer Five Seasons Hotel in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Mount Mercy College hosted the meeting and the theme was Continuing Service.

The keynote speaker was Ed Bittle, co-chair of Iowa Legislative Task Force on Higher Education. The keynote speech was titled A Challenge to Change: Education for the New Century. In the keynote, Bittle stated that educational legislation must become broader in scope as legislation on day-to-day operations is not needed.

Interesting facts from 1989

  • January 20, 1989 was the date of the first organizational meeting of the Local Arrangements Committee for this year.
  • 130 people registered for the conference.
  • The College Immunization Law was enacted in Minnesota. It mandated immunization requirements for students attending Minnesota post-secondary institutions. The new law was discussed at the town meeting at the conference.

Workshop highlights

  • Many workshops focused on preparing for the ‘90s, including one on military service credit and new information from the Defense Activity for Nontraditional Education Support (DANTES) and an athletics regulations update.

  • The workshop called “Conflict Resolution with Staff” by Marlene Moon, Morningside College, and Ranny Knutson, South Dakota State University, featured “some interesting case reviews and procedural steps to help you improve and provide staff service.”

  • A “Personal Financial Planning” workshop offered attendees tips on how to prepare for their financial future, including setting goals, avoiding pitfalls, and  providing for retirement.

  • Attendees were also able to go on a campus visit to Kirkwood Community College to visit the new human services complex.

A Message from Ingrid Nuttall - 2013 UMACRAO President

Greetings!

Another fall semester is in full swing, and that means our already busy days become positively packed. I want to share some exciting developments for UMACRAO that have taken shape since our last newsletter:

  • Our membership numbers have significantly increased in the last month. Thank you to all of you who have renewed and welcome to all of our new members. I look forward to a full report of our organization’s membership at the annual meeting.
  • UMACRAO has gone social! Join us on Facebook and Twitter for timely, meaningful information and connections all year round. You’ll see more of a social media presence at our annual meeting, too, so please be a part of the conversation.
  • Planning for the annual meeting has been underway for several months, and we have an outstanding program planned. Join us for pre-conference workshops, rich sessions, wonderful food, and lots of fun at the Hotel Kirkwood in Cedar Rapids, IA.

Between now and our annual meeting, I would like you to think about the changes and opportunities you see for UMACRAO; specifically, think about how you could make a difference in our organization. At the meeting, you’ll have the opportunity to visit with current UMACRAO leadership at our table in the vendor area to learn more about the organization and sign-up for volunteer opportunities. If you can’t make it to the meeting you can still be involved--feel free to contact me (ingridn@umn.edu) or our membership chair directly(rhonda.k.kitch@ndsu.edu) to learn more about the opportunities UMACRAO has for you.

Thank you and see you in October.
