It’s time to dust off those historic records and take a look back into the archives. When was the last time UMACRAO was hosted in Cedar Rapids, Iowa? Well, 1989!

Annual Meeting

The 56th UMACRAO Annual Meeting was held from October 22-24, 1989 at the Stouffer Five Seasons Hotel in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Mount Mercy College hosted the meeting and the theme was Continuing Service.

The keynote speaker was Ed Bittle, co-chair of Iowa Legislative Task Force on Higher Education. The keynote speech was titled A Challenge to Change: Education for the New Century. In the keynote, Bittle stated that educational legislation must become broader in scope as legislation on day-to-day operations is not needed.



Interesting facts from 1989

  • January 20, 1989 was the date of the first organizational meeting of the Local Arrangements Committee for this year.
  • 130 people registered for the conference.
  • The College Immunization Law was enacted in Minnesota. It mandated immunization requirements for students attending Minnesota post-secondary institutions. The new law was discussed at the town meeting at the conference.


Workshop highlights

  • Many workshops focused on preparing for the ‘90s, including one on military service credit and new information from the Defense Activity for Nontraditional Education Support (DANTES) and an athletics regulations update.
 
  • The workshop called “Conflict Resolution with Staff” by Marlene Moon, Morningside College, and Ranny Knutson, South Dakota State University, featured “some interesting case reviews and procedural steps to help you improve and provide staff service.”
 
  • A “Personal Financial Planning” workshop offered attendees tips on how to prepare for their financial future, including setting goals, avoiding pitfalls, and  providing for retirement.

  • Attendees were also able to go on a campus visit to Kirkwood Community College to visit the new human services complex.
